In May 2024, we launched a pilot of Friday Night Lights for young people at risk of being involved in criminal activity in the community, and would benefit from the outlet of a safe space with positive role models to help steer them in a more positive direction.
In partnership with Police Scotland, Edinburgh Leisure and Community Sports Hubs, the project aims to help build meaningful connections whilst offering free provision for young people who would benefit from an open access football-based project with an added range of support.
Activities include: playing football, wellbeing activities, enjoying a bite to eat and encouraging conversations with Police Scotland around behaviour and ramifications of this, helping to build positive connections.
Tynecastle Park is a place to meet and make friends, as well as choose better paths.
Project times and info:
- Fridays from 6.30pm - 8.30pm
- The Shed, Tynecastle Park - the home of Heart of Midlothian FC
- Young people aged 11-18

Friday Night Lights is suitable for young people who:
- are at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity in their community.
- would benefit from an open access provision to deter them from being on the streets.
- would benefit from early intervention to have a lasting impact and offer a meaningful alternative.
The outcomes we aim to achieve:
- Decrease in young people getting involved in anti-social behaviour on the streets of South-West Edinburgh, on a Friday Night.
- Increase in young people accessing free provision through Big Hearts.
- Give young people a better understanding of Police Scotland’s role and help to build a better rapport with officers in their community.
- Young people and the wider community feeling there is an accessible provision as an alternative offer to these issues/behaviours.
