Big Hearts ‘Inspiring’ Volunteers honored by the City of Edinburgh

Three groups of volunteers are recognised for their outstanding contribution through Big Hearts.

As part of Volunteers Week 2017, Big Hearts Community Trust is delighted to announce that 30 Big Hearts Volunteers are honored with Inspiring Volunteering Achievement Awards from the City of Edinburgh in recognition for their ‘inspiring’ contribution.

The City’s most prestigious awards reflect the exceptional range of organisations and individuals across Edinburgh’s charity and non-profit sectors. This recognition comes only 15 months after launching our Big Hearts Supporters Movement, and we believe demonstrates how the fantastic commitment from our Big Hearts Volunteers have made a positive and significant impact across the community.

  • Individual Award for Big Hearts Volunteer Harry Bell.
Harry is a volunteer befriender for older people through our partner charity Vintage Vibes, and supports Kinship Care young people as a part of our Big Hearts Befrienders service. Harry was also leading our first team at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival last month, which saw 25 runners raising funds for Big Hearts and Save the Children!
  • Team Award for Big Hearts Football Memories Volunteers.
23 Big Hearts volunteers have supported the delivery of our Football Memories programme in 2017, making a huge difference to the lives of people with dementia and their carers. So far this year, the team has provided over 20 hours of support, collectively completing 230 hours of volunteering!
  • Team Award for Big Hearts Care & Repair Volunteers.
Through our partner Care & Repair Edinburgh, 6 Big Hearts Volunteers provide practical & technical support to older and disabled people in their own home. The Big Hearts handyperson volunteers have been so prolific that they have carried out over 165 referrals for Care & Repair clients in 2017, a record! This award will be presented by the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh at the awards ceremony on the 7th of June.

Massive congratulations to all those involved and well done for being an ‘inspiring’ example for volunteers across the city!
